Chapter 11

The phone began to ring. He was about to ask Carina to answer it. Then he remembered that she was pretending to be mad at him. He picked up the phone and answered it.

"Good, it's you. Have you got the money," a man snarled.

"What? Who is this?"

"You called me ... about the ring." There was a brief pause. "A couple of days ago your girlfriend called me. She said that you wanted a security access ring."

"What's your name?"

"Marvin," he snorted.

"We bought a ring from you?"

"What the hell is the matter with you?" Marvin grumbled. "No. You didn't buy a ring. You offered to buy a ring. I got it, and I want my money."

"I'll meet you down in the bar," Chaz mumbled and hung up the phone. He threw on a pair of tennis shoes and grabbed his wallet. He had only a few dollars to his name, but he had to hear the story.

A short elevator ride later, he was crossing the lobby. He strolled through it, keeping an eye out for Marvin. On the way, he noticed the female bellhops gathered around the check-in counter. A few guests lounged near the fire. The aroma of bacon, syrup, and eggs wafted out of the restaurant. It made his stomach grumble.

Chaz strolled into the bar. The only man present sat at a table across the room. He was partially bald, and what hair remained was wild and frizzy. His eyes were set a bit too close together and bulged out as if he were choking. His face seemed pinched and cheeks pockmarked with years of bad acne. "Marvin?" Chaz asked.

"Give the man a prize," Marvin said sarcastically. "Where the hell is my money? You promised to pay me twenty thousand for this thing." He tossed the ring onto the table.

Chaz sat down and looked over the ring. The gold ring lay in the middle of the table. The morning light glinted off the sapphire and gold.

"Where's my money?"

Chaz looked up at Marvin. The ugly man's face was twisted into a snarl. There was no hint of humor in his face. He drew out his wallet. From it he took out a business card and wrote a number on the back of it. "This is my expense account number. I'll make sure that the money is ready and waiting for you."

"What? What is that I hear? You don't have my money on you?"

"No one walks around with that sort of cash. Everything is done by bank transfer these days. The account is anonymous and offshore. All you have to do is call in and provide your transfer information."

"Hey, I'm not letting you out of my sight until I have my cash." Marvin crossed his arms and leaned back. "Get it done."

Chaz tapped his wrist computer. A blue holographic image hung in the air. He accessed the interface for his corporate bank accounts. The entire process was encrypted and authentication was based upon DNA and bio analysis. Once inside the account, he said, "I need your transfer account number."

"Yeah okay," Marvin replied. He wrote down the number on the business card. "Here you go. This better be legitimate."

Chaz inputted the account number and transferred the digital cash. "Check out your bank account. You'll find that it is all there."

Marvin accessed his account and grinned; "We're good." He rose up to his feet. "It's a pleasure doing business with you."

After Marvin left, Chaz stared at the ring. It lay on the table before him. He picked it up and held it to the light. Two words 'fatum malum' were inscribed on either side of the stone. Hmm, I wonder what that means? The thought passed away too soon. It was something he should have pondered longer. However, his lips curled up into a smile. It was the key to Sarah's game. After he told Jackie his story about being a woman and a magic ring, Sarah would show up with the real thing. She probably contacted Marvin days ago before he used the VR unit.

Holding the ring up to the window light, he made sure it was authentic. It looked much like a woman's high school class ring. However, the stone contained embedded computer code. It was genuine.

He strolled out of the bar, ring in hand. He stuffed it into his pocket and exited the bar, wandering across the lobby. Tourists joined him in the ride up the elevator. Tension filled the air. The couple was in the middle of a fight. He was glad when his floor arrived. He strolled down the hallway, feeling an incredible weight was off his shoulders. He had the ring, revenge, and the story. Life had turned around for him.

After opening the door with his keycard, he picked the ring from his pocket. He needed to gain access to the VR environment, but had no desire to get trapped again. The ring was the perfect means to insure that. He accessed the VR online site. Once there, he entered an exclusive site.

"Please enter your security pass code or perform a bio scan," an automated attendant requested. Chaz held up the ring, and his computer scanned it. "Pass code accepted." The site opened to a collection of exclusive virtual resorts. The most popular appeared to be 'Hedonist World'. After selecting it, the access parameters were downloaded to his VR headset.

Chaz settled into a crushed red velvet lounge. He placed the VR unit on his head and closed his eyes. It felt as if he were floating on a cloud.
