Jackie's jaw dropped in astonishment.
Julianne was also wearing an exactly identical yellow vinyl raincoat as well. Same colour, same size, same everything. Whaaaat? Jackie could not help wondering if he was still abed and this was some especially vivid dream. A nightmare perhaps? This yellow raincoat business was getting to him. She had also buttoned her raincoat right up to the collar although she'd left the hood down. Suddenly, Julianne looked up and spotted Jackie standing nearby with his mouth hanging partially open. Her eyes widened when she spotted Jackie. Jackie hoped that she would not laugh. Miserably, he steeled himself for her mocking laughter. It never came. She smiled and approached Jackie.
"Good luck." Plugger grunted as the others magically dispersed, leaving Jackie alone with her. Everyone knew that Jackie had a major crush on Julianne. Everyone had a crush on Julianne. All the boys secretly lusted after her. She was often the sole topic of conversation behind the maintenance workers shed where they occasionally gathered out of sight of the teachers if the weather was good. Julianne was as beautiful as she was unobtainable. Jackie's breath caught. He didn't know what to say. Normally talkative and garrulous, for once he was tongue-tied. She stood there, her long blonde hair streaming in the cold wind. Julianne smiled; a lovely warm smile, which left Jackie feeling weak at the knees. Julianne's smile also made her cheeks dimple and he liked the way it even extended to her shining eyes, which were full of a warmth he had not seen before. And that beautiful little snub-nosed ski-jump nose…God, but she was lovely. Several other guys looked on jealously at the pair but none dared approach them. Julianne was well known for cutting would be suitors down to size and none wished to incur her wrath. Although Julianne's genuine friendliness and natural warmth ensured she was universally liked by all, she did not suffer fools gladly. Ironically, Julianne's no-nonsense attitude only served to increase her popularity. She was not 'easy' like some of her classmates were and people respected her for that.
Her green eyes crinkled as she solemnly regarded Jackie standing before her in his raincoat. "Hi," she said.
Shyly Jackie replied, "Hi." He wondered why someone like her would be wearing something like that. Julianne was just about the last person he had ever expected to see wearing a yellow raincoat exactly like his one. It was… So yellow and bright!
Sensing Jackie's curiosity, she explained, "My mum made me wear this." Jackie was stunned. "She said I had to wear it to school, whether I liked it or not." Jackie listened to Julianne's comments with a growing incredulousness and wonder. Amazing. Not Julianne? How come her of all people? She was the last person whom he had expected to see wearing something like this to school. "I didn't want to wear it, but she said that I had to," Julianne continued. "She said that if I was going to walk to school in the rain and dark, I had to wear a yellow raincoat."
"Oh, wow! Same here!" Jackie said. "My mum said exactly the same thing too!" He couldn't believe this. Suddenly, the future looked far less bleak than it had previously. Maybe, just maybe his mother had unwittingly done him a favour after all….
"You too?" Julianne was clearly surprised.
"Yes," Jackie replied without rancour although the memory of the fight earlier still rankled. He recalled only too well the way they had fought over it. That particular battle was still painfully fresh in his mind. "She said I had to wear a yellow raincoat because she didn't want me to get hit by a car."
"Hey, that's what my mum said too!" Julianne exclaimed. Suddenly she grinned. "Join the club." They smiled at each other. Jackie was lost in her wonderful mysterious green eyes. They were hypnotic, compelling. "Actually," she admitted, "at first, I didn't like it, but now I kinda like it." Thoughtfully, Julianne went on, "It feels rather nice."
Jackie was surprised with her admission. She did look beautiful in her raincoat. Absolutely gorgeous, in fact. He liked the way the vinyl stretched over and emphasised her budding breasts. He still disliked his raincoat very much. However, he wasn't going to tell that to Julianne. Yet, his raincoat did give him a funny feeling whenever he wore it. There was one good thing about it… It covered his erection. Jackie was very glad Julianne couldn't see the instant tent pole below. "Mmm," Jackie mused, "Well, I really don't like it much but my mum said I have to wear it so I guess I have to." He shrugged as if to show his indifference.
"Hey!" Julianne exclaimed, "We can wear our raincoats together!"
"Yess…" Jackie breathed. Yes they could…. Jackie decided that perhaps he didn't hate that thing quite so much after all. My embarrassment coat... If it was good enough for Julianne, then it was good enough for him too. "Yes, we can." He smiled at Julianne. Suddenly he hoped that it would rain again tomorrow.
As if guessing his thoughts, Julianne giggled. "I hope it rains again tomorrow so we can wear our yellow raincoats to school together."
Amen to that, Jackie thought. Suddenly the five minute warning bell rang. That meant they had five minutes to get to class. Or else. "Come on," Julianne urged. "We'd better get going, or we'll be late." Quickly, they took their dripping raincoats off and hung them up next to each other on the pegs provided next to the lockers. They made a vivid splash of bright colour next to all the dark coats everybody else favoured. Jackie noticed that Julianne's hand lingered longer than was really necessary on the vinyl material of her raincoat but he did not dare comment. Their eyes met again as they exchanged a look of complete understanding. Hurriedly, they gathered up their maths books and pencil cases and dashed off to class.
Jackie hoped that she would sit next to him. He entered first and sat in his usual position. Much to his great joy, Julianne sat right next to him. She grinned at Jackie before opening her books. "Mummy's boy," someone hissed as Jackie sat down. Jackie flushed angrily. He just did not know what to say. Several of the speaker's cronies laughed.
Julianne turned and shot back, "If he's a mummy's boy, then I'm a mummy's girl too."
Jackie sat stunned. He could scarcely believe the way Julianne had stuck up for him like that. Before Jackie's tormentor had time to compose a suitable reply, looking very pleased with herself, Julianne turned to face Jackie and mouthed a quick kiss. Her eyes were dancing with wicked merriment as Mr Brown, their elderly, acidulous and often irascible maths teacher arrived. No one liked him. He was invariably cranky and had a reputation for sarcasm. Mr Brown never could understand why not everyone found algebra or fractions quite as easy as he did. He also handed out more after-school detentions than any of the other teachers too. No one dared throw spitballs or anything like that in any of his classes! It was truly astonishing how he always appeared to be able to identify the culprits as if he had eyes in the back of his head. Teaching was just a job to him and it showed.
As usual, his greeting was as curt as ever. "Good morning, everyone."
Obediently, the class chorused as one, "Good morning, Mr Brown."
Satisfied that due respect had been accorded him, he commanded, "Ok, open your books to page 37. We'll continue our work on fractions today." He peered at the orderly rows of students facing him. "I'll check your homework while you do these problems." Several students were shivering in the cold. A slim girl called Jenny was practically blue with cold. She was seated by the large glass windows, hugging herself to try to keep warm. The rain had become a downpour again. The tall gums outside were creaking and groaning like old men while they leant and swayed in the gale-force wind. Leaves flew in the turbulent air and scudded along the rain-slick concrete of the yard. It appeared as though the rain dance performed only a few days before had all too been effective. It never rains but it pours. Surprised that Jenny was apparently not paying attention to her studies, Brown asked, "Jenny, are you ok?"
Nervously, Jenny replied, "The heater's broken. That's why it's so cold in here."
"I see." Thoughtfully, Mr Brown scrutinised his teenaged class. They did look cold. His concern for them was less from any genuine concern for their well being but from the far more practical consideration that if the children were cold, then they would not be able to concentrate on their lessons. He made up his mind. "Since the heater is broken, I'll give you all three minutes to go get your coats on."
The class needed little encouragement. Almost in unison, they rose as one and headed for the door. Jackie remained seated. He would have liked to have worn his raincoat because, he too, was cold. However, he was still too embarrassed to wear it to class in front of his tormentors. Julianne rose and smiled at Jackie before departing. Jackie sighed softly and happily sat back. For the first time, he dared to think that maybe he did have a chance after all… A few moments later, she returned with her yellow vinyl raincoat. She was also carrying Jackie's raincoat. "Here, put it on." Julianne smiled. Ten minutes ago, there would have been no way Jackie would have worn it to class. However Julianne's confidence and clear desire for him to wear his raincoat swayed the issue. Jackie knew she would be very disappointed if he did not put it on. Besides he was beginning to like the way it looked and felt. It was so smooth and shiny. His erection had surfaced again. The fact that Julianne looked impossibly sexy in her yellow raincoat only added to the attraction. Willingly, Jackie slipped it on. Aware every eye was upon them, Julianne ostentatiously buttoned it up to the collar. "There," she whispered, "You look lovely." Happily, he helped Julianne with doing hers up. Jackie could feel the jealousy emanating from many of the eyes in the room. He knew that most of the other guys would have killed to be in his position with Julianne fawning all over him. And ironically, it was his hated yellow raincoat which had brought them together. This time, there were no snide remarks. Mr Brown looked surprised at what they were wearing but said nothing though he did raise one quizzical eyebrow upon noticing Jackie and Julianne in their raincoats.
Miraculously, Jackie managed to escape from the class without being called on. Jackie was so fixated on Julianne and what was happening that he was quite unable to concentrate. His erection had refused to subside either. It would have been acutely embarrassing if the acidulous Mr Brown had hauled him up in front of his classmates to answer questions on the blackboard like several others had been required to. Julianne had been one of those required to go up front and answer a set question in front of her classmates. It was a favourite form of mental torture and even the class swots had been known to freeze up completely once the chalk was in their hands, which only added to the dubious quality of the 'entertainment' being provided. Jackie couldn't take his eyes off her while Julianne stood there in her raincoat, writing down the answer to a particularly tricky question on the blackboard. She looked absolutely wonderful in it. She'd gotten it right too. He did not have to look around to know that every eye was upon Julianne in her yellow raincoat. Amazingly, she looked anything but daggy wearing it. Jackie had to admit that it really did look terrific upon Julianne. It actually looked sexy on her.
Reluctantly, Jackie and Julianne had to take their raincoats off before heading off to the next class. Normally, coats could not be worn indoors unless special dispensation had been received. The last class had been an exception because of the broken heater. Julianne had leaned very close to Jackie as they reached the clothes pegs and the noise the raincoats made when they touched had been quite electrifying. Both Jackie and Julianne were acutely aware of the sexual tension and chemistry between them although they were both too young to realise it for what it was. Jackie thought that he must have died and gone to heaven as Julianne happily trotted alongside him. He was suddenly very glad that his mother had made him wear his raincoat to school. Otherwise he would not be where he was with the best looking girl in the whole school walking alongside him.
Recess came and went. Much to Jackie's delight, Julianne sat with him while they shared their morning snacks. The next class was English. It would be a double period. Then lunch. English was Jackie's favourite subject so the class represented few challenges to him. At least the time would pass quickly, unlike Maths, which always seemed to drag on forever. The class kicked off with a short spelling test, which posed few problems for either Jackie or Julianne. (both scored 18 out of 20) Then various writing and comprehension exercises followed. Having the lovely Julianne sitting next to him ensured that the time passed quickly. For once, Jackie was unusually distracted. He could hardly tear his eyes away from Julianne's smile or that cute nose. Eventually, the bell rang to signal the much welcomed lunch break. Happily, everybody piled out of the classroom. It was still raining outside. The rain wasn't as heavy like it had been earlier but a bitingly cold wind ensured that it would be a chilly and somewhat wet walk to the tuckshop.
When they reached their lockers, Julianne commented, "It's still raining." A broad smile split her lovely face while she stated the obvious.
"Yes," Jackie agreed. "It's still raining."
Julianne pretended to think. "Perhaps we should wear our raincoats."
Jackie grinned. "Good idea." He felt amazed. Only a few hours earlier, the idea of wearing his raincoat for the short walk to the tuckshop would have been absolute anathema but with Julianne, everything had changed. Julianne genuinely did not care what the others thought of her choice of apparel. Sometimes Jackie wished that he shared her confidence. Happily, he helped Julianne with putting her raincoat on while the chattering students swirled around them. Julianne promptly put Jackie's raincoat on while he held out his arms for the long sleeves. Her smile widened while she carefully did up the buttons for him. Thoughtfully, Julianne appraised him before pulling his hood up and lacing it tight. Jackie groaned softly while she stood and did everything up. His penis was so hard. So stiff… Now that's a real stiffie, he silently mused. He could feel it throbbing insistently below. Jackie wished that his erection would go away but it obstinately stayed. The only consolation was that the vinyl folds of his raincoat effectively covered up the evidence of his arousal. "There," she smiled. "Now you won't get wet." Quickly, Julianne pulled the hood of her raincoat up over her head before tightly doing up the drawstring laces and securing it in place. After ensuring that the strings would not slip, she grasped Jackie's hand before towing him along the corridor. Jackie was conscious that everyone was staring but he did not care. This time no one teased them. Several of the other girls looked extremely thoughtful as they studied the couple.
The rain and wind beat ineffectually against them as they strolled up the path towards the tuckshop while the others hurried by, heads bowed against the stinging wind and rain. Jackie had never been so aware of Julianne's warmth as she clung close to him. Their raincoats flapped and rustled loudly in the wind. The rain pitter-pattered against the raincoats and the hoods. Water streamed down the yellow vinyl. Jackie had to admit to him that he was beginning to really enjoy wearing his raincoat. It really did look quite nice. He liked the way the yellow vinyl gleamed so brightly like that. It also felt so wonderfully smooth too. It felt good. However, Jackie could not understand why he had that erection each time he wore his raincoat. That was very strange. But it was nice too. He wondered if Julianne felt the same way that he did. The smile on her face told him that it was highly likely that she did.
After buying hot 'Four n' Twenty' meat pies (the great Aussie favourite and cultural icon) and a can of Coke each for lunch, they retreated back to the shelter of the main complex. It was really too cold and wet to remain outside. However, Julianne made no move to take her raincoat off, opting only to lower the hood. Jackie left his on too; it was with some surprise that he realised that he didn't want to take it off. While they happily chatted, Jackie realised just what a nice person Julianne was. She was so easy to talk to, he thought. Most of all, she appeared to take a genuine interest in him as a person. He had never previously thought that he could talk to a girl like this. For the first time, he felt relaxed in her company. Jackie never wanted that lunchbreak to end.
Several others joined them while they ate. Six or seven of Julianne's girlfriends and Jackie's own circle of mates sat down with them. The girls in particular, wanted to know where they'd gotten their raincoats. Everyone laughed when Jackie and Julianne explained how they had been compelled to wear them by their parents. They all wanted a closer look and Julianne cheerfully obliged. "It looks very waterproof," one girl commented.
"I do like the way it looks and feels," another said.
"They sure are," Julianne replied. "Yes, I also really like the way it looks and feels as well." She showed the others how it buttoned up so water could not get in. Not to be outdone, Jackie did the hood up again on his so the others could see what it looked like.
"Much better than having the fucking wind blow your fuckin' umbrella inside out," another girl growled. It seemed that the wind had picked up her umbrella and wrecked it this morning. Consequently, she'd been soaked. She was still wearing her gym clothes because her uniform had been saturated almost immediately after. There was general agreement that was certainly the case. Others had also copped it when their umbrellas blew apart and disintegrated in the wintry gales that always hit Melbourne around this time of year. The great storms that roared out from the icy wastes of frozen Antarctica travelled uninterrupted across thousands of miles of lonely, trackless ocean before bursting upon a shivering Melbourne. Jackie looked outside. It was still blowing as hard as ever. The ski resorts would be happy, he knew.
"What's it made out of?" Tracee Talavera, Julianne's best friend asked. "I've never seen anything so shiny and smooth before."
Julianne replied, "Vinyl."
"I see." Thoughtfully, Tracee ran her hands over the smooth vinyl. "Can I try it on?"
"Sure." Julianne said. Quickly, she stood up and took it off and gave it to Tracee to try on. Tracee was all smiles while she carefully buttoned it up. Happily, she whirled around this way and that, admiring herself in the slick smooth vinyl. There was a general chorus of approval with her appearance.
"Could I try it on as well?" another girl called Jessica asked. "Here, try mine on," Jackie said.
"Thanks!" Jessica replied. She had Jackie's raincoat buttoned up and hood firmly done up within seconds of pulling it on. "Wow, it feels so so nice," she complimented Jackie. "I like it."
"Let me try it on," another voice said. It was Hiep Thi Le Ly Nguyen, one of Julianne's classmates. Vietnamese born and bred before migrating here by leaking boat, Le Ly was also fairly fashion conscious as well as similarly extroverted and outgoing as Julianne.
Reluctantly, Tracee took it off so that Le Ly could try it on. Astonished, Jackie watched as everyone, even his mates tried them on. "I'm going to get one," Tracee said.
"Me too," Le Ly chorused.
"What colours can you get?" the dark haired Monique, Tommo's girlfriend asked
"Lots," Julianne replied. "Red, yellow, green, blue, pink and purple."
"I saw your sister earlier, what's her name?" Joanne asked
"Lourdes." Jackie replied. Lard-ass.
"Lourdes. That's right," Joanne said. "I saw her this morning. She looked great in that pink raincoat." She continued, "That's the colour I want to get."
Le Ly smiled. "I'm going to get a yellow one."
Before they had time to continue this discussion, the bell rang to announce the end of lunch. Only two more classes then the day would be over. Quickly, the last two to try on the raincoats handed them back to Jackie and Julianne. He felt slightly stupefied. Far from being the social embarrassment his raincoat had been earlier, it was fast becoming the latest 'must have' accessory for everyone. Everyone had genuinely liked them. Tracee and Joanne, in particular had raved over them. Le Ly had just said she wanted a yellow one. Like his one. Jackie remembered how reluctant Tracee had been to take it off. Even the tough Plugger had appeared to like his 'choice' of rainwear.
Unfortunately, Jackie and Julianne had separate language classes (Jackie was learning German while Julianne was taking Indonesian) so they had to separate. She was also being picked up straight after school by her mother for a dental checkup, so Jackie would not see her again until tomorrow. "Meet you at the usual place tomorrow morning?" Jackie asked. He hoped that Julianne would say yes. He looked forwards to having her all to himself for ten or fifteen precious minutes before school.
"Sure," Julianne replied. "Her eyes were sparkling as she continued, "I'm looking forwards to it." Mischievously, she added, "I hope it rains."
Jackie grinned. He was in heaven. This was a close to a date as he'd ever had with Julianne. Well, it wasn't really a date but it wasn't far off being one either. "So do I," Jackie laughed. He really did hope it would rain. He liked Julianne and wearing his raincoat very much.
"See you later, " Julianne called as she trotted down the rapidly emptying corridor. Jackie slowly followed. This was shaping up to be the best day of his life, not the worst. Earlier Jackie had wanted to die. Now he could hardly wait until tomorrow to see her again. Jackie wondered if she would let him hold her hand tomorrow. Happily, he floated into the classroom.
