"Hi, how are you?" Renae happily greeted Joanne, her floor Business Leader and immediate superior. Each Myer store employed Business Leaders who were responsible for each floor. It was their job to make sure everything was going smoothly and to help organise promotions, direct the setting up of displays and so on. Although each individual store had to adhere to the various store promotions that Head Office arranged, they were otherwise given a good deal of autonomy how they set up displays and local in-store promotions as long as the prices did not vary.
"I'm fine thank you," Joanne replied, "How about you?"
"I'm fine too, thanks." Renae replied as she busily re-stocked the fixture containing the raincoats. She was pleased to note that quite a few had sold since she had last been in only a couple of days ago.
"I'm glad to hear that." Joanne said. She noticed the raincoats hanging up. "Wow! They look nice! They're certainly very colourful," she commented. Theatrically, Joanne held one hand up to her eyes as if to ward off the glare in exactly the same manner Renae's sister, Melanie had done earlier. Grinning, she observed, "They're very bright too!"
"They are aren't they?" Renae agreed.
Thoughtfully, Joanne ran one slim well-manicured hand over them. They rustled softly as she touched them. Surprised, she commented, They are very smooth." She picked one up and held it up. "It's rather nice."
"They sure are!" Renae enthusiastically replied.
"Have they been selling well?" Joanne asked. The bottom line was – would the merchandise sell? It was no good if they did not sell. The longer they sat there, the more money Myer would lose. Discounting was a last resort. It was always better by far to sell them all at full retail price.
"Looks like it." Renae replied. "The raincoats came in the other day and I set them up here. I've had to put out around a dozen more a few minutes ago."
"Good." Joanne approved. "I don't think we'll have much problem moving them then." Thoughtfully, "I might get one for my niece."
"Actually, I have an idea." Renae shyly suggested. She hoped that Joanne would take her up on it. It had been fermenting in her head for a while.
"Go ahead. Tell all." Joanne smiled.
Diffidently, Renae answered, "I was thinking…"
"Go on," Joanne encouraged.
"I was thinking that if we wore them, they might sell a little faster." Renae examined Joanne's face to see what her reaction would be. "People would notice them more."
"Hmmm," Joanne thought for am moment before smiling at Renae. "Actually, that's not a bad idea."
Thanks," a relieved Renae said. She had hoped that Joanne wouldn't laugh. Renae also knew the real reason behind her suggestion and it had nothing to do with increasing sales.
"Let's run it by the others and see what they think," Joanne suggested. She raised her voice slightly so it would be heard above the ubiquitous Muzak being piped throughout the store. It was just before opening time and the rest of the team was checking the cash registers and counting out the float. "Sally, Michelle, Le Ly, come on over!" she called out. Once the others had assembled around the pair, Joanne said, "Renae just suggested we should wear these raincoats here - get people to notice them more." She smiled at them and asked, "What do you all think?"
The young and lovely eighteen-year-old Le Ly who was studying in Australia, far away from her homeland of Vietnam, shrugged and said, "I don't mind." Renae was acutely conscious of Sally's eyes on her. She slushed slightly and looked away. Renae had a feeling that Sally knew. That look in her eyes… Renae felt very uncomfortable under her steady gaze.
Michelle giggled briefly before saying, "It's not a bad idea. I'll go along with it."
Renae waited anxiously to see what Sally would say. Her silence was most discouraging. At last Sally grinned and spoke. "Actually, I think it's a very good idea. I reckon we'll sell a few."
Renae almost collapsed with relief. Sally approved! Their eyes met. Sally winked at Renae before walking over and selecting a blue raincoat and pulling it on. Michelle took a green one. It contrasted her flame red hair perfectly. Le Ly opted to wear red. It looked stunning against her dark brown skin and long dark hair. Joanne went for the purple one. Renae watched in a mild state of shock as the other girls happily pulled their raincoats on and buttoning them up amidst much giggling. Quickly, she pulled on the bright yellow one. It was her favourite colour. Besides, to her, yellow was the traditional colour for a raincoat. There was a sly look in Sally's eyes as she strode over and cheerily helped Renae button it up. Jokingly, she drew up the hood and did up the drawstring laces. Happily they admired each other. Attracted by the commotion and laughter, several other staff strolled over to see what was going on. Amidst much laughter, and to Renae's great delight, they voluntarily donned raincoats too. Even a couple of the guys put them on themselves. Although they were ostensibly children's raincoats, they (especially the larger sizes) were generously cut and fitted everybody well. The general consensus was how nice they looked. Joanne was genuinely surprised how good they looked once worn. They were genuinely fashionable looking. A couple of others actually said they might even buy one for themselves. Sally looked very thoughtful as she regarded Renae in her yellow raincoat.
Moments later, the doors opened and the first early birds began streaming in.
The car park was nearly full when Carol drove in. It looked like the shops were busy today. Because it was a Saturday, many people were taking advantage of the opportunity to go shopping. Most seemed to be young families like theirs. Others were heading towards the attached cinema complex. Eventually she found a parking spot and cautiously pulled in. The last thing she wanted was to scratch her expensive new BMW. Andrew would be furious if she did.
Lourdes enthusiastically piled out of the car, eager to begin the day's shopping. She loved checking out all the pretty frocks in the stores. Little Lourdes loved shopping as much as Jackie hated shopping. However, Jackie dragged his feet. He moved far more slowly. He was not looking forwards to this little shopping expedition at all. Jackie hoped with all his heart that their search for a yellow raincoat for them both would prove to be fruitless. Suddenly impatient with the time Jackie was wasting, Carol snapped, "Hurry up!" Quickly, he scrambled out the car. Lourdes uttered a tiny almost inaudible snort of laughter and looked away so she could not see Jackie's reaction. Happily, she took her mother's hand while Jackie reluctantly slouched along behind.
Within seconds, they were inside the bustling shopping centre. It was busy, and there were crowds of people everywhere. Sullenly, Jackie followed Carol and Lourdes down the escalator to the ground floor level at Myer where the children's clothing department was located. Anxious to get the shopping over and done with, Carol determinedly headed along the aisle towards the children's wear department with Lourdes and Jackie in tow.
Suddenly Jackie stopped dead as they reached the children's wear department. Horrified, he stared at the attractive girl wearing a… very bright shiny yellow raincoat! He moaned in pure pain. This was going to be far worse than he had dared think it would be. He had never seen anything quite like that before… Jackie could not believe that he was going to be forced to wear something like that! As if guessing his thoughts, Lourdes turned and simpered at him. Surprised, Carol stopped before walking over to where she was busily hanging up some clothes.
"Excuse me, can you help me?" she asked.
"Sure." Renae turned to face Carol. She noticed that she had two children in tow. One was a pretty little blonde girl around ten or eleven years old. The other was a teenage guy around fifteen or sixteen. He was scowling angrily. Hostility radiated from every pore of his being and it unsettled Renae. Family fight, perhaps? Renae wondered what was making him behave like that as she asked Carol, "How can I help you?"
"Well, I'm looking for a yellow raincoat." Jackie shuddered. He knew all too well for whom they were intended for. Carol continued, "Like the one you're wearing."
Renae could see that Carol still looked a little puzzled as to why she was wearing one, so she explained, "We're having a promotion – that's why we are all wearing raincoats like these." Lourdes giggled. Jackie glowered at her. Le Ly chose that very moment to walk by in her red raincoat. The bright red vinyl looked magnificent against her brown skin and glossy black hair. She smiled at Renae and Carol as she passed them both.
"They certainly look lovely." Carol commented.
Renae was pleased. "Thank you." she politely replied.
"I'm looking for a raincoat for my children here," Carol quietly said.
"I see," Renae answered. "What colour are you after?"
"Yellow," she replied.
"I don't want one!" Jackie growled. Sulkily he muttered, "I hate yellow!"
"Be quiet!" Carol hissed. "I'm getting you a yellow raincoat and that's that."
Embarrassed, Renae looked away. She hated scenes like these, although she did feel a twinge of sympathy for him. Soberly, she reflected that not everyone shared her enthusiasm for yellow raincoats or indeed, rainwear of any kind.
"I like yellow," Lourdes contributed. Jackie glared at her. He looked ready to hit her.
Sensing the growing tension between Jackie and Lourdes, Renae hastily interrupted, "Would you like to have a closer look?"
"Why yes, thank you." By now Carol was beginning to feel increasingly frazzled. Damn Jackie! He could be such a brat sometimes… His behaviour only made her more determined than ever that he would bloody well wear the yellow raincoat she bought him. He was going to get yellow and that was that. Jackie could protest all he liked but it was for his own good. She did not want him to end up becoming another road statistic. There had been another article in the morning paper about the high number of pedestrian casualties lately and it had cut to the quick with Carol.
Renae led Carol and the children towards the rack where the raincoats had been displayed. Carol kept a firm grip on Jackie's arm lest he try to run away. Lourdes skipped happily alongside. Shyly, Renae confided to Carol that yellow was her favourite colour. In fact, she'd bought one exactly the same colour the other day. "Try telling that to Jackie," she said wearily. Renae would have liked to console Jackie but she dared not. That lady looked annoyed enough as it was. She would help this woman find what she wanted and avoid trouble.
"Here we are," Renae said brightly, indicating the multi-hued rack of vinyl rainwear. Jackie shrank back as he noticed them but Carol held onto his hand firmly. His worst nightmare was unfolding before his disbelieving eyes. They were so bright! So yellow! So… girly! Jackie could not believe that his mum intended to buy one for him and actually make him wear it. He wished the earth would swallow him up, such was his mortification. Lourdes had spotted the bright pink raincoats and she'd danced around to look at them more closely. "Ooh, I love it!" she squealed. "Can I have one, Mummy? I want a pink one!"
Renae smiled. She understood how this sweet little girl felt. Melanie had loved her new pink raincoat equally as much. "Whats your name?" she asked Lourdes.
"My names Lourdes," she shyly replied.
"That's a nice name." Renae answered. "Would you like to try one on?"
"Yes please!" Lourdes gabbled. "Please, Mum!"
"Well, I don't know," Carol said. "I had planned to get you both a yellow one but…"
Sensing her mother's weakening resolve, Lourdes moved in for the kill. Her face crumpled as if on cue. "Pleeease Mum!" she wailed. I want a PINK one!" Jackie looked on scornfully. Lard-ass could have pink for all he cared. Amused, Renae looked on at the tableau unfolding in front of her.
Carol ignored Lourdes' entreaties and asked Renae what she thought. She explained that the reason she wanted to get them both yellow rainwear was because of the way those young children had been nearly killed by a car in the rain the other day. "Do you think a pink one is safe enough?" she concluded.
Renae was surprised. She'd seen the accident on the news the other day, she told Carol. "Yes, I think a pink one is certainly safe enough," Renae opined. "My sister bought one and she loves it."
"Ok, you can have a pink one," Carol told Lourdes. Lourdes shrilled with excitement as she realised that she could have a pink one after all.
"What size is she?" Renae asked Carol.
"Um, I'm not sure." Carol answered. "She's growing so quickly, you know."
Renae looked thoughtfully at an expectant Lourdes hovering by the pink raincoats. "I think she'd be about a size eight or so," she mused. "Let's try that one first." Quickly, Renae searched through the pink raincoats hanging up until she located a size eight. "Here we are!" Renae exclaimed as she extracted it from the others. "Here, Lourdes, try it on. Let's see if it fits you." Lourdes needed no second urging as Renae held it out for her to put it on. Happily, Lourdes slipped her arms into it as Renae slid it on. Her face was glowing as Renae helped her button it up all the way up to the collar. "There!" Renae happily approved. "You look lovely. Go look in the mirror over there." Lourdes scampered over to the large mirror to admire herself. A squeal of joy told Renae and Carol all they needed to know. Lourdes face was bright with happiness as she walked back over to rejoin the others. Jackie's face was dark while he gloomily studied his little sister who was positively dazzling in her new pink vinyl raincoat.
"Do you like it?" Renae asked, knowing what the answer would be.
"Yes, oh yes!" Lourdes enthusiastically nodded. Happily, she ran her hands down the smooth vinyl before pulling the hood up and over her head. Renae laughed as she said, "Here let me help you." Lourdes quickly approached Renae who leant down and did up the laces, drawing the hood tight around her little elfin face. As soon as Renae knotted them off, she rushed over to look at herself in the mirror. Amused, Carol smiled at Renae while Lourdes admired herself in the mirror.
Jackie hid behind his mum and tried to make himself as small as possible, in the vain hope that Carol might overlook him. He was dreading the ordeal of having to try it on in front of everybody. He knew that Carol would make him try it on. In public! It would be humiliating. Within seconds, Carol dashed his hopes by half pushing/pulling him forwards. "Could you pick one out for him?" Carol asked. Jackie glowered. "Yellow," she said, in a very firm voice so that there could be no possible misunderstanding. By now, Lourdes had returned from the mirror. She was clearly enjoying Jackie's discomfort. Happily, she twirled around in her new pink raincoat, obviously relishing the way it crinkled and rustled. She made no move to take it off or even undo the hood.
Sympathetically, Renae asked Jackie, "Whats your name?" Jackie glowered at her. "Jackie!" Carol scolded. "I apologise for his bad manners." The look on her face told Jackie that he could expect trouble when he got home.
Wisely, Renae kept her counsel to herself. She felt for him but was unwilling to antagonise Carol further. Thoughtfully, she looked at Jackie. About a size twelve, she thought. After rummaging through the rack containing the yellow raincoats, Renae picked up the raincoat which Li Xi'a had sewn the buttons onto, with such care and love less than a week ago. "Here we are," she said. "Would you like to try it on, Jackie?"
Jackie backed away but Carol firmly pushed him forwards. With a bad grace, Jackie complied. He was going to be made to try that… thing on so the best thing to do was get it out of the way just as quickly as possible. Besides, the last thing he wanted was to have his Nintendo privileges revoked. Losing his Nintendo would be worse by far than having to wear that hateful raincoat. Morosely, he allowed Renae to slip it on then button it up for him. It fit perfectly. "You look very nice, Jackie," Renae complimented. Her compliment failed to even elicit a smile. Scarlet faced, Jackie stood still, arms akimbo and stared downwards at the floor, hoping no one would recognise him. This was even worse than he had thought it would be! It was so shiny and yellow! He felt like a baby in it. Distantly, he could hear Lourdes' delighted tittering.
Relieved that it seemed to fit him so well, Carol asked Renae, "What do you think? I think it seems to fit Jackie just fine."
"I think so too." Renae agreed. "Would you like to see how you look in the mirror?"
Jackie had had enough. Angrily, he pushed Renae's outstretched hand away and glared downwards. All he wanted was to be allowed to take it off. Shocked, Carol angrily remonstrated, "Jackie! How dare you!" She looked apologetically at Renae before turning to Jackie, "If you don't behave, I'll buy you a pink raincoat and so help me God, I'll make you wear it everyday to school!" Lourdes' eyes were wide as she put both hands over her mouth to stifle her giggles.
Jackie knew that Carol meant every word she said. Yellow was bad enough as it was but pink?!? He would never live it down at school. All his credibility would instantly vanish the moment he showed up outside the gates in that shockingly pink raincoat. Defeated, he allowed Renae to take his hand and lead him to the mirror. When they reached the mirror, which was out of Carol's sight, Renae leant down to console Jackie. "Don't be upset like that," she gently said. "You look like a deep sea fisherman in your raincoat." Smilingly, she continued, "You look very handsome." Gently, she pulled up the hood and did up the laces. "There! All ready for the sea now!" Renae smiled.
"I suppose so," he muttered. Jackie was feeling rather surprised. His new raincoat felt strangely cool and smooth. It was very slick and smooth to the touch. There was a strange stirring in his groin area that he couldn't identify. Nevertheless, he still hated it with a passion. He could not wait to take it off. Jackie had never felt so embarrassed in his life. Lourdes' behaviour was not helping as she stood nearby and giggled. Quickly, he undid the hood and pulled it down again before Renae could lead him back to Mrs Riley.
Carol smiled at Renae as they reappeared from behind the other clothing racks. "He looks very handsome in his raincoat," Renae greeted Carol.
"He does, doesn't he?" Carol replied. Jackie felt mortified the way they were discussing him like this as though he didn't exist.
Lourdes suddenly piped up, "Jackie looks so sweet." Instinctively she'd chosen the very words calculated to annoy him the most. Jackie flushed angrily and took a step towards Lourdes who automatically retreated behind Renae. A warning glare from Carol stopped Jackie dead in his tracks.
Renae commented, "He should get plenty of wear out of that."
"I hope so." Carol agreed. That was assuming she could get him to wear it at all… Mentally, she stored away her threat to make him wear a pink raincoat to school. It looked to be even more effective than revoking his Nintendo privileges.
"They're very well made." Renae observed. "You won't have to worry about them getting wet in those."
"They certainly look like it" Carol said. Or run over, she thought. Briskly, she continued. "I'll take them both."
The raincoat which Li X'ia had so carefully attached the buttons to, now had a new owner – an angry fifteen year old teenage boy who was anything but enthusiastic about wearing it.
Jackie tugged on his mother's arm. "Can I take it off now?" he pleaded.
Carol was on the verge of saying no before relenting. "Only if you promise to behave," she warned. "Or I'll make you put it straight back on again and you'll wear it while we shop. Do you understand?" Hastily, Jackie virtually ripped the raincoat off, so eager was he to get it off. Carol rolled her eyes in Renae's direction.
"Lourdes, could you take your raincoat off so I can take it to the counter?" Renae asked. Lourdes shook her head – no! She hugged herself defensively. "You can put it back on as soon as your mum has finished paying for it," Renae comforted Lourdes. She explained, "I have to take the tag off."
"A what?" Lourdes asked.
"The tag," Renae said. "We put tags on all our clothes here so they don't get lost or stolen." Carol smiled at Renae. What a lovely girl, she thought.
"Ok," Lourdes said. Carefully, she undid the hood and unbuttoned the raincoat. Unlike Jackie, she took much more care taking it off. Lourdes wanted her new pink vinyl raincoat to remain new for as long as possible. She loved it already.
Renae gathered both raincoats up in the crook of her arm and took them over to the counter. Carol, Jackie and Lourdes followed. Her friend Sally greeted Renae, "Buying more raincoats are you?" Renae flushed. Sally definitely knew more than she was letting on…
"Actually, no," she smiled. "They're for those people over there."
"Oh, I see. No worries." Sally smiled at Carol as she approached the counter. Sulkily, Jackie stared off into the far distance while Lourdes watched everything with a keen interest, in particular, her new pink raincoat to make sure it didn't disappear. While Lourdes impatiently looked on, Renae quickly went behind the counter to remove the tags while Sally rang up the sale. Smiling, Renae detached Lourdes' brand-new raincoat from the other and helped her put it back on. Happily, Lourdes held her arms out for Renae to slip it on. Jackie grumpily watched while she showed Lourdes how to do up the buttons and the hood. Highly amused, Sally watched the whole performance. It was better than 'Neighbours', she thought. She smiled a secret smile to herself. Sally had surreptitiously watched Renae attending to the Rileys in between serving customers. She looked forwards to chatting to Renae about it all. Sally smiled at Jackie and asked, "Would you like to wear yours too?"
Angrily, Jackie said, "No way!"
Sally bit her lip and exchanged looks with Renae. It was as much as she could do not to laugh. Embarrassed, Carol looked away. Little boys can be such pains sometimes… She wanted to slap him but didn't dare. Not with all those people about and the kind of scene Jackie was likely to create if she did. She briefly considered making him wear the yellow raincoat back home but discarded the idea. By now, her head was throbbing and all she wanted was to get the rest of the shopping done then flee.
Renae and Sally watched them stroll off. Sally observed, "I don't think that kid was very keen on getting a yellow raincoat."
"No he certainly wasn't," Renae rolled her eyes for extra emphasis. "But that lovely little girl, her name's Lourdes, she really liked her new raincoat."
"Reminds me of someone I know," Sally slyly commented. "She likes wearing raincoats too."
Renae flushed again. She felt hot under the cheeks. Did Sally know her little secret?
Remorselessly, Sally continued, "I think she likes wearing them a lot."
Sally would have continued but for the arrival of a customer at the counter. "Talk to you later," she said. Relieved, Renae escaped from Sally's clutches and resumed her normal duties. Grinning, Sally watched her move off. She looked very sexy in her yellow vinyl raincoat, Sally thought. It really suited her…
Just how much did Sally know? Renae thought. Her mind was in turmoil. It would be so embarrassing if she knew her dirty secret. Flustered, she dropped several clothes on the floor, something she didn't normally do.
Jackie scowled as Lourdes happily bounced alongside her mum. He had rarely felt so embarrassed before. Everyone was watching them! However, Jackie kept his counsel. He didn't want his mum to get mad at him and make him put that yellow raincoat on in front of everybody. Other shoppers smiled at Carol and Lourdes as she skipped along in her new pink vinyl raincoat. Carol felt a little better. Jackie was behaving himself and Lourdes looked lovely in her new raincoat. At least she liked it! Carol knew she would have no trouble getting her to wear it to school. In fact she was more likely to encounter difficulty in getting Lourdes to take it off! Unlike Jackie… Carol sighed inwardly – she was likely to have trouble getting him to wear it. However, she had gone too far to back down. Her lips pursed slightly. Jackie would wear it whether he liked it or not.
Eventually after lunching at McDonalds and completing the remainder of the shopping, they were ready to set off for home. By now Jackie had had enough. It had been a terrible day. Lard-ass was still wearing her raincoat… He stared gloomily out the car windows as Carol sped home. The sky was cloudless and clear. Jackie hoped it would not rain for a long time. Suddenly, he had a vested interest in hoping it would not rain. However Lourdes had other ideas. While Jackie sulked, she happily gabbled away before commenting, "I hope it rains soon!"
"I hope it doesn't!" Jackie growled. Lourdes turned and stuck out her tongue at him. Suddenly emboldened, "I'm not wearing it." He knew that Mum would make him wear the raincoat to school if and when it did rain but that did not mean he wouldn't let her know exactly how he felt about wearing it. Jackie suppressed a shudder as he looked at the bag containing the raincoat. He was not looking forwards to having to wear it.
"Jackie, be quiet." Carol said, in an ice-cold voice. "I bought it for you and you will wear it whether you like it or not." Jackie glared at her. "And if you look at me like that again, we'll go straight back to Myer and exchange the yellow raincoat for a pink one." Carol let the silence hang for a long moment before adding, "And I will make you wear it all day, every day for a week." Jackie sighed and looked out the window. Life was so unfair, he thought. He just hoped it would never rain again. Not ever...
