Renae got her wish far sooner than she had expected. The next day dawned cold, wet dark and drizzly. Dark clouds hung low overhead as torrents of rain sheeted downwards. She was glad no classes were scheduled today. Thursdays was her 'off' day. It was the only day of the week she had no classes to attend. Quickly, she showered and dressed before putting her new raincoat on. Renae looked forwards to testing her new raincoat in the very elements for which it was designed. She was desperately anxious to see how waterproof it really was. Because it was so dark and gloomy outside, Renae settled on the yellow raincoat. Safety yellow and all that, she thought. Renae smiled happily. Yep, I'll wear this one today. It certainly looked waterproof, Renae thought as she slowly and lovingly buttoned it up. She adored the way it buttoned up. Buttoning it up had already become a little ritual. It was one she knew that she would never tire of. Renae felt a delicious thrill of pleasure as she did up the buttons. It looked so good! It felt so good! Mmmmm… She hugged herself before running her hands up and down the smooth vinyl.
Happily, she sat down to eat breakfast and read the morning paper while still wearing her new raincoat.
A few moments later, her young sister Melanie wandered in. She was just two years younger than Renae. Melanie was just beginning university where she hoped to graduate in accountancy. In America, she would be known as a freshman or 'fresher' A natural brunette like her older sister, Melanie was a naturally bright, vivacious and outgoing person. Ever bubbly, effervescent and cheerful, she was immensely popular with everybody who came into her personal orbit. Both girls were far more than sisters, they were close friends too. They did everything together besides sharing the most intimate confidences together, particularly those concerning the opposite sex. Melanie had a steady boyfriend although Renae was currently single. She was 'in between boyfriends', so to speak
Spotting Renae sitting at the kitchen table, Melanie said, "Hi how are…" Her words trailed off as she saw what Renae was wearing. "Wow! What's that you're wearing?"
Feeling slightly embarrassed, Renae muttered, "My new raincoat." To justify the reason for her wearing it indoors, she hurriedly continued, "I'm going to take Rex for a walk once I've finished breakfast."
"Wow!" Melanie chirped, "It's awfully bright, isn't it?" Melanie stared at her raincoated sister and giggled, "Where's my sunglasses? It's blinding me!" Theatrically, Melanie held up her hands in front of her as if to protect her eyes.
"Stop it, Mel!" Renae laughed.
Melanie strolled up around to where Renae was sitting and touched it. Surprised how smooth it felt, she commented, "It feels so smooth and shiny."
"It is, isn't it?" Renae replied.
"I've never seen anything like it before." Melanie thoughtfully mused. "Where did you get it?"
"At my work – They just came in the other day." Renae answered
"Lets see what you look like! Here, let me help you!" Before Renae had a chance to react, Melanie had impulsively pulled the hood over Renae's head. Renae turned around to face the grinning Melanie. Quickly, Melanie did up the drawstrings, fastening the hood tight around her sister's head.
Melanie smiled at Renae and took a step back to admire her handiwork, "Wow, you look cute!"
"Oh thanks!" Renae sarcastically replied. "Do you like it?"
"Mmmm." Melanie thought for a moment. "Actually, yes, it is rather nice. I like it." She glanced outside. It was still raining heavily. Both girls could hear the steady drumming of the rain on the roof. "Great for a day like today too. And to think I've got to go to uni later too," she moaned.
"Isn't it?" Renae agreed. After a brief hesitation she told Melanie, "Um, I bought a pink one too – want to try it on?"
"Pink?" Melanie exclaimed. "You know that's my favourite colour! Yes, can I try it on?"
"Sure!" Renae said, "Want to try it on now?"
"Yes please!"
"Ok, hang on," Renae said as she eased herself off the chair. Melanie watched as her sister walked across the spacious room, still clad in her raincoat. She felt strangely excited. She was looking forwards to trying on the pink raincoat. A few moments later, Renae reappeared, bearing the bright pink raincoat slung over one arm.
Melanie cooed with delight when she spotted it. "Oooo, that looks nice!" she warbled.
Renae grinned. She was pleased that Mel liked it. She had been a little worried how her sister would react. A lot of people viewed such rainwear as daggy, uncool and strictly for little children. Most people her age would not be seen dead in anything like that. Certainly, Myer's 'Miss Shop' (the teenage girls wear department) was unlikely to stock any such rainwear either now or in the near future. "You like it do you?" she asked.
"Oh yes!" Melanie smiled. "It looks cute!"
"Here," Renae said, "Let me help you." She held it out for Mel to put her arms into. Happily, Melanie inserted her arms into it and turned around to face Renae.
"Wow!" she giggled, "It is really smooth and shiny!" Melanie ran her hands down the vinyl. "I love the way it feels…"
"Hang on, Mel, let me do it up for you," Renae said.
"Sure," Melanie agreed as Renae leant forwards to button it up.
"Waoww! You look nice," Renae cheekily parroted Melanie, as she carefully did up the last button, encasing her sister in gleaming pink from just below the knees to neck. "Just one last thing…" Renae abruptly pulled the hood up over Melanie's head and tied the drawstrings tight, securing the hood around her sister's face. "There! You look lovely!" Renae praised. "Now go look at yourself in the mirror!" She playfully spanked Melanie on the bottom to send her on her way.
Obediently, Melanie trotted off. A distant slightly muffled squeal of excitement told Renae all she needed to know. Moments later, Melanie returned. "Wow! It looks great!" she enthused.
"I'm glad you like it," Renae told Melanie.
"I sure do!" she agreed. Wide eyed, Melanie peered downwards at her raincoated body. "I like it very much."
Renae could not help feeling peculiarly happy that Mel liked it so much. They could have some great raincoat fun together, she knew. Though that didn't mean she was going to tell Mel how she spent her spare time while private… On the other hand, maybe… They rarely kept confidences from each other.
"Look, why don't you have brekky now?" Renae suggested, "then we'll go walk Rex."
"Woof!" Rex barked with excitement upon hearing his name and a walk in the same breath.
"Down Rex!" Renae laughingly chided as he excitedly leapt up in the air. "Down, boy!"
"Oh oh," Melanie giggled, "I think Rex heard you."
"He sure did," Renae leaned down and gently scrunched his fur. "Hang on Rexy boy, I'll take you for a walkies as soon as I've finished my breakfast."
"It's raining," Melanie observed with a sly grin on her face.
"It certainly is." Renae agreed.
"Real raincoat weather," Melanie giggled. "Fit only for the ducks."
"Sure is." Renae grinned at her sister. "Why do you think I'm wearing this?" she asked, indicating her raincoat.
"Why indeed?" Melanie laughed as she poured the milk into her cornflakes. Quickly, she sliced up a banana and let the pieces drop into the bowl before joining Renae at the table. The rain continued to fall as they happily consumed their breakfast. Both girls kept their raincoats on. Neither bothered undo the drawstring hoods but left them where they were. Melanie and Renae giggled and laughed, aware how silly they must look wearing their raincoats indoors but neither cared. Both were enjoying themselves too much to care what they looked like.
"Uh, Ren," Melanie suddenly piped up. "Can I ask you a favour? Actually a couple of favours."
"Sure. What is it?" Renae asked.
"Ah," Melanie looked downwards, suddenly embarrassed. "Could you get me one too? I really like it." She brightened. "Actually, make that two. Could you get me a yellow one too? I like that one too." she said, indicating Renae's raincoat.
"Sure, I can." Renae replied. Suddenly curious to know why Melanie wanted one too, she asked her why.
"Um, I dunno" Melanie said. She peered down at the bright pink vinyl. "I just like it." Renae was quite certain that Mel liked it. If the effect it had had on her was anything to go by, no wonder Mel liked it too! Melanie continued, "I really like the way it looks and feels. So shiny and smooth."
"You know, Mel, that's why I like it too," Renae commented. It is nice isn't it?" Thoughtfully, she played with the vinyl material with her fingers. Her yellow raincoat crinkled and rustled gently as Renae touched it. She felt very good. It was amazing the way wearing it made her feel like that. Renae never wanted to take it off. She wondered if Melanie felt the same way.
"Mmmm," Melanie murmured, You are right, it is nice. I like it." She grinned at Renae. "I like it a lot. Thanks for letting me wear it."
"That's OK" Renae said, delighted that Mel seemed to share her enthusiasm for the vinyl rainwear. "I'm glad you like it."
"Oh I do!" Melanie exclaimed. She glanced outside. It was still pouring outside. "I was going to ask you. It's still raining. Can I borrow it to wear to university later this afternoon?"
Renae was surprised but pleased. "Of course you can!" she replied. Slyly, "I wouldn't want my darling sister to get soaked and catch a cold…"
Melanie snickered with barely suppressed laughter. "Thanks!" Impulsively, she hugged her older sister. Renae hugged back. She was acutely aware of the vinyl raincoat covering her body as well as Mels. Both raincoats crinkled and rustled as they stuck stickily to each other in their embrace. The wonderful odour of the new vinyl wafted over them as they hugged. Renae ran her hands down Melanie's raincoat-covered back, delighting in the feel of the smooth warm vinyl. Melanie did the same and for a few minute both girls cuddled each other close, rubbing their hands on the vinyl material of each other's raincoats. Renae's heart was beating very fast as they caressed each other. She could feel a growing heat in her groin again…
Somewhat shakily, Melanie said, "I've finished my brekky! C'mon, lets go walk Rex now!" as she broke away from their embrace. Her eyes were shining. "I want to go walk in the rain, try it out."
"Same here!" Renae laughed.
"Well then! What are you waiting for? Lets go!" Melanie exclaimed.
"Rex!" Renae called. Walk! Walkies!" Rex leapt up high in the hair and cavorted around on his hind legs before dropping back down and leaping up again. Renae and Melanie could not help laughing while they watched Rex quivering with excitement at the delicious prospect of a walk! All those lovely smells to check out, other dogs to socialise with along the way and chat up (particularly those good-looking bitches in the vicinity.) Rex was in doggy heaven. Rex was so exited that his vocal chords momentarily deserted him and all he could do was whine his pleasure. His little tail was a blur. Renae and Melanie were both equally excited at the prospect of actually getting to walk in the rain and test their raincoats. Renae helped Melanie smooth her raincoat down and adjust her hood while Melanie cheerfully reciprocated the favour.
Quickly, Renae put Rex's own tartan doggy raincoat on while Melanie watched. She joked, "You should get him a vinyl one like ours."
Rene burst out laughing. Suddenly serious, she said, "You know, that's not such a bad idea…" After checking everything was secure, they prepared to leave.
The wind and rain hit them almost as soon they left the warmth of the house. The steady rain pitter-pattered loudly against the vinyl hoods of their raincoats. It was a sound quite unlike anything Renae had heard before. It really seemed to emphasise the protection against the elements that her raincoat was affording her. Renae was amazed how waterproof her raincoat was. She remained bone dry beneath its yellow vinyl folds. The drawstring hood and unique 'double' over buttons ensured that water would be unable to enter. Her legs also remained dry because it reached down just below the knees. The bright yellow Wellington style sea boots (purchased from a boat chandlery store) Renae had opted to wear with her outfit ensured that her jeans did not become saturated with water streaming down the raincoat and from the grass. Only a little water splashed on her face but that was to be expected; it was all part of the fun.
Mercifully, the cold wind had dropped so the rain fell vertically straight from the leaden sky. Therefore, it was simply wet rather than cold. The road was slick and shiny with water. Rainwater gurgled past in the gutters on its long journey to the sea. Both girls watched with fascination as the water smoothly streamed down the slick vinyl raincoats that they were wearing. Renae stood out like a storm beacon in her bright yellow raincoat while Melanie was resplendent in her pink one. Their raincoats flapped and rustled in the light breeze as both girls strolled along the footpath. Rex bounded along ahead, while they happily followed, arm in arm. Renae thought that she must have died and gone to heaven. She truly loved her new raincoat. She liked it more than the numerous dresses in her wardrobe. None of her other clothes had ever given her this much pleasure before. It was a case of sensory and visual overload for her. The wonderfully fresh smell of the rain-soaked grass and road, the look, feel and smell of her shiny slick vinyl yellow raincoat and of her sister's own pink raincoat all conspired together to make it a memorable occasion for Renae. She breathed a silent prayer of thanks to the unseen girls in China who had produced them with such love and care.
Renae could not remember ever feeling more supremely happy than that time when they leisurely strolled along the rain swept road toward the large local park. A meandering tree-lined creek ran through the middle of the park. Actually, the term, "park" was a misnomer because it was a genuine wildlife 'corridor' set up in the suburbs for the safe passage of the indigenous local wildlife unique to Australia, such as the cuddly furry koala bears, the occasional small wallaby, beautiful native birds such as the sulfur crested cockatoo, crimson rosellas and rainbow lorikeets, lizards and (fortunately only occasional) snakes. The multicoloured lorikeets were invariably friendly and would happily accept food from their hands. Both Renae and Melanie loved coming down here. The nature reserve was kilometres long and they had spent countless happy hours down here, playing hide and seek, walking the dog or just simply retreating down there when upset. It was quiet and peaceful, a haven from the local suburbia surrounding their home and the nearby city of Melbourne itself.
Along the way, they excitedly chatted about what they had been doing at university, boys, Melanie's new boyfriend Tony, whom their girlfriends were seeing and of course, their new raincoats. Melanie admitted to Renae that she loved her new pink raincoat. Renae was thrilled to hear that Melanie liked it so much. She decided that she would have to explain to her later how she really felt about wearing it. Eventually, it was time to turn back for Melanie had to go to university. Incredibly, it was still raining. Normally, it rarely rains like that in the temperate southernmost Australian mainland city of Melbourne but this occasion was different. However both girls remained dry, although both were perspiring – the exertion of walking had warmed them both up and the vinyl just did not breathe. That was just part of the attraction… Renae thought. She loved the way the rain just streamed down the smooth vinyl. It did not collect or puddle but flowed in smooth rivulets straight downwards. Renae was glad that she had put her rain-boots on – the long emerald-green grass was saturated. Melanie's blue denim jeans were soaked just above her ankles.
All too soon, they were back home. Regretfully, Renae hung up their raincoats to dry. She knew it wouldn't take long because of the way the water just slid off the vinyl. She wanted to wear it again. So did Mel, judging from the way she lovingly touched the pink raincoat after hanging it up. "Don't forget to get me my raincoats tomorrow." Melanie admonished, with a twinkle in her eye as she said so. "Oh and by the way, can you get me a pair of boots like yours too?"
"Don't worry, I won't forget," Renae promised. "I'll get them tomorrow after uni." She would get them from the Myer City store. That way she could avoid any potentially awkward questions from Sally.
"Thanks." Melanie said. "I owe you!"
"That's Ok," Renae laughed. "Anyway, I must get some study done now. See you later." She added. "Oh, and have a nice rainy day!"
Melanie laughed and headed off to her own room.
When Renae finally emerged from her room, Melanie had long left for university. She'd also taken the pink raincoat. Renae was pleased. She was really looking forwards to having lots more raincoat fun with her! She fixed herself a drink and something to eat then went back inside to continue catching up with her study to make up for the day before.
