She is made to walk up the hill to the place of execution, arms tied to the bar from which she will hang, wearing a scrap of old, torn, cotton sheet that contributes little to providing the modesty she craves. On arrival, the bar is roped onto the tree in the middle of the clearing and her ankles are bound together. Like that, she hangs in the heat of the day, the tattered covering ripped from her naked body, a grubby square of material left in place to hide her sexe, until even that too is removed and her completely naked body, hair shaved from armpits and pubic bone, is exposed to view. What little dignity that might have remained for her has been stripped away
